West Beach in Winter

It’s a snow day in Boston.  I’m looking out of the window and there is a blizzard with 18inches of snow on the way.  I always wonder how to get out from the house to capture nice scenes before the places are trampled.

Yesterday, however, the temperatures rose to a balmy 20F so I got up at 5.30am and headed to a location I’ve visited before, West Beach at Beverly Farms which is up from Boston.  I knew the tide was relatively low but I thought the old pier may look interesting in icy conditions.  It was lower than I’d expected, out beyond the posts.  I checked out some of the other features of the beach.  There were frozen ripples on the sand, tracks of salt which were pretty cool, so I thought I could work those into the sunrise scene.  But I went back to the old pier first.

Skyfire on TPE had predicted a colorful sunrise and this time it delivered.  Pinks, turned to orange and then I was having photographers remorse, thinking I could have put this colorful sunrise to better use.  But as my daughter says, “you get what you get and you don’t get upset”.

It’s so much fun out in the cold, especially at sunrise as places are often quiet and in this case the frozen sand meant that there were no footprints and I could walk around without any evidence in the shot.  I made that mistake last week where I walked into snow in front of a good foreground element.  I felt like a criminal trying to cover my tracks.

Good luck shooting!
