Skye’s the Limit: Old Man of Storr

Sunrise at Old Man of Storr, Skye, ScotlandThe Old Man of Storr is a large rock pinnacle on the Trotternish region of Skye and is one of the most recognizable features on the Isle.  In the daytime there are hundreds of people seen around the area.  This isn’t the case at sunrise when it is very quiet.

This was my last morning on Skye.  My first venture up the mountain a couple of days before had not been as successful as I would have liked.  I ended up on the wrong side of the Old Man and didn’t have enough time to move before the sun rose.  It takes 30-40minutes to hike up and is pretty steep at parts.  There was a lot of cursing when I was almost back to the bottom and realized my jacket had fallen off my backpack somewhere on the mountain so up I went again!

On this day, when I woke up at 3.15 the sky didn’t look great at all but I dragged myself out.  At the bottom of the mountain at 3.45am I met a guy, Steve, who had slept in his car overnight and he convinced me that it may be worth venturing up despite the cloudy weather.  I’m very glad I did as the dark clouds began to clear around sunrise and colored pink.  There were five of us up on the mountain to witness a beautiful sunrise.  This shot is just moments before sunrise when the clouds were still colored.  A great morning!
